Fantastic turn out for our joint ride with Leeds and Liverpool Universities hopefully the first of many this year!
After pretty miserable weather for the preceeding week the Gods smiled upon us and it was (almost) t-shirt weather on sunday morning (well, 7/8ºc) . Thirty mountain bikers descended on the Peak park, around half from Liverpool and Leeds, and half from Sheffield. The route took in some of the classic descents the Dark Peak has to offer, Stanage Edge, the Beast and the Screaming Mile, with another group tackling the Devil’s Elbow, Jumble Road and Wimble Womble Hill DH A lack of light meant that an excursion up to Insanity wasn’t on the cards!. Basically a record, we only had 5 or 6 punctures throughout the day, with the beast accounting for half of these and an almost complete lack of mechanicals (apart from a quick dash home to grab a spare derailleur!).
Quick video of the beast – with a little tumble.
Whilst this carnage was ongoing, some twenty road riders guided Leeds and Liverpool around some of the best climbs in the peak district, with Mam Nick, Monsal Head and Curbar Edge (home to the pain and suffering of BUCS Hill Climb last month) being just a few of the climbs covered. Not without a 45 minute stop for cake and coffee though.
Still muddy from riding and generally pretty knackered, we gathered in Bar One for sh^t banter, (free) chilli and chips, and beers (not free, boo ). Hope to see you guys and girls again soon – maybe with less mud and more light!
